Becoming Walt Whitman Oct. 8 to Oct. 24
Title: Becoming Walt Whitman Oct. 8 to Oct. 24
By David Beckman of Santa Rosa
Set in the rough and tumble days of Manhattan, just before the onset of the Civil War, David Beckman’s play is a coming-of-age story about a young, rough-hewn Walt Whitman contending with family, gender, love and genius as he forges his future as one of America’s greatest poets.
Manhattan in 1855 is a vivid backdrop for Beckman’s play which follows the 35-year old Whitman from Brooklyn to mid-town Manhattan and back again during the period when Whitman’s classic “Leaves of Grass” is first published. Featuring Gabriel Grilli as Walt Whitman.
Directed by Russell Kaltschmidt
